Important Handouts & Information

Attendance

Parents and guardians are reminded that prompt and regular attendance at school is extremely important. At the same time, a child that is ill should not be in school, since this may result in further impairment of their health or the exposure of other children and staff to a communicable disease. We ask all parents to work in collaboration with us to make sure students are not ill while in attendance. We also encourage every effort to have children in school each day they are able to attend.

  •   Absence Reporting
    •   When your child is absent from school, you are required to notify the school office to report your child’s absence before the start of the school day. Staff will be on duty to take these calls beginning at 7:30 AM each day. You may also leave a detailed message reporting your student’s absence on our school attendance line if you call outside of our normal office hours. Please be sure to contact our school attendance line for every absence. Emailing teachers directly is not sufficient to report an absence.
    •   Failure to telephone in an absence each day that a child is out of school by one hour after the attendance bell (8:50am for SHJH) will result in a telephone call the same day. Calls will continue to be made to the parent/guardian and all emergency contacts until the student’s location can be verified. Failure to contact the school shall result in an unexcused absence and possible well-being check by local authorities.
    •   It is considered “best practice” to provide the school with a note from your health care provider for illnesses with absences over three days.
    •   Regarding tardiness to school, after the ninth instance of tardiness, a note may be required, or some suitable school-based intervention or disciplinary action may be taken.
  •   Make-up Work Requests
    •   Assignments missed due to absence will be given one day per absence plus one day. Requests for homework should be given to the school office before 11am and picked up at the school at the end of the school day (no later than 3:55pm).
  •   Vacation
    •   Vacations are considered unexcused absences. Assignments missed due to vacation will be given one day per day of absence plus one day. Homework will be provided to the student upon return from vacation.

Arrival & Dismissal

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to make this process safe for your child. If you have any further questions, please call us at 815.469.4330.

Messages & Deliveries to Students

Messages

  • Messages will be delivered to your students during their lunch periods. If there is an afternoon message, it will be delivered during their 9th period via P.M. announcements. Please understand that messages called in after 1:45 P.M. or "just a reminder" messages are more difficult to get to students since it is so close to the end of the day.
Deliveries
  • Parent drop off items should be placed in the drop off cart located in the main office. It is then your student's responsibility to retrieve those items from the office. If there is an unexpected delivery, we will contact your student during lunch or during p.m. announcements. We do our best not to interrupt class time.
  • Food deliveries from any delivery service will not be accepted (ex. Door Dash, Uber Eats, Grub Hub, a direct food establishment.)

SHJH Library

Cars

Cars will pull up along the driveway alongside the school. Drop offs will occur just past the pavilion. For reasons of safety, at no time may students cross from the parking lot to the school building. Students are to remain in the car until curbside by the pavilion. After school, pick up will take place in the WEST parking lot. Pick-ups will occur along the curbside beginning south of the pavilion with the lead car pulling up to the security cone. Please pull up to the sidewalk in a single file line and teacher - supervisors will assist you in locating your child. At no time may students cross from the school building to the parking lot. At no time may students enter the parking lot. Drivers may not park in the lot and then leave vehicle to get their student. All vehicles must wait in line to pick up their student.

Buses

In an effort to reduce traffic congestion ALL bus routes will enter and exit using the EAST lot (closest to Harlem). No student pick-ups are allowed in the front lot. If you are picking up your child early from school and will be signing him/her out, you may park in the EAST lot and enter the building in order to sign out your student. Students who will be walking or getting a ride to school are to use the WEST parking lot.

Bicyclists

Students riding bikes are asked to lock their bike at the bike rack. Students are not allowed at the bike rack during the school day. Bikes are to be walked once on school grounds. Bikes must be taken home at the end of the day.
