WHAT CAN I DO AT HOME TO HELP MY CHILD WITH READING?
For Reading Recovery students in grade 1:
-Have your child read the books in their Reading Recovery bag to you.
-If your child needs support, remind them to:
                        -Think about the story.
                        -Go back and reread.
                        -Try it again.
-OR just give them the word.

-Read story books TO your child.  Then discuss the story.  Ask questions like:
-Who were the characters in this story?
            -What was the problem?  Solution?
-What happened from beginning to end?
-What connection did you make to this story?
-What was the most important part in this story?  Why?
-Visit a website to enjoy listening and reading books at many levels.
-Your child may listen to a story read to him/her. Click on English with the audio signal to hear the title read aloud.
-When your child is ready, he/she may read a book after listening to it a few times, by not clicking on English (with the audio symbol) under each page. https://www.uniteforliteracy.com/

-Read books at your child’s level TO your child.
-Visit https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/bookwizard/ and select the “Reading System” as DRA.  You can match the book level to the books on the back of your child’s books in their Reading Recovery bag.
-Most of these books are at the local public library.

-Have your child write about a book they read.
-Remember they can say words slowly and write what they hear.  Not all the words may be spelled correctly and it’s ok!  Encourage them to add detail.

-Have your child write a sticker/picture story with materials you have at home.

-Visit the public library- books, movies, audio books!  They also have great online support, if you have a library card.
