Articulation

-Ask your child what sound they are working on. Practice good production of the sound through story read-alouds. Take turns reading the story, or ask your child questions when reading aloud to them. (i.e. Who is the story about? What do you think will happen next?)
-Practice vocabulary words or spelling words that have your child's targeted speech sounds.
-Play "I-Spy" when driving together in the car. Look for things that have your child's targeted speech sound.

LANGUAGE

-READ WITH your child.
- Ask questions throughout a short story (i.e. Who is this story about? What do you think will happen next?, etc)
-Ask for synonyms of vocabulary throughout a story.
-Make Post-its your friend! Have your child keep Post-its handy when reading. Write questions about the story, main characters, important details, and/or unknown words.
-To improve memory skills, play games like, "I'm going to the grocery store to buy..." The first person says, "I'm going to buy an apple"...The second person says, "I'm going to buy an apple and green beans"...The next person repeats the previous items and then adds their own. The game continues until someone can't remember all of the ingredients.
-For more memory improvement - have your child repeat multi-step directions out loud to determine they accurately received all of the information.
-Work on descriptive language by playing "Guess Who". Your child can describe different objects/items that they are thinking of. Avoid using words such as, "stuff and things".
-Reinforce proper grammar at home. (i.e. "I heard you say - I drinkeded all the water, but we need to say, I drank all the water).

FLUENCY

-7 Tips for talking with your child who stutters
http://www.stutteringhelp.org/7-tips-talking-your-child-0
-Ask your child what their favorite speech fluency strategy is.
-Maintain eye contact with your child when they are speaking.
-Do not finish their sentences/words for them.
-Help them to feel comfortable during moments of dysfluency and try not to make them feel as if they need to be "fluent" all the time.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
A speech-language pathologist not only works on speech sounds, but also language development.
"Speech" can refer to a child's verbal means of communication with regard to their articulation of speech sounds, speech fluency, or vocal quality.
"Language" can refer to the development of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures, how students comprehend spoken language, how students can express their ideas and thoughts to others, and social communication.
