Our Classroom News for November 17th
More information will follow, please continue checking for updates.
Language Arts This week, the students will be completing The Talent Show on Monday, November 17th. Then, the students will be reading and discussing Ramona Forever by Beverly Cleary. In this story, Ramona, who has always been a little sister, becomes a big sister, too, when her mother has a baby. You may enjoy discussing the story doing these activities with your child. Together you can develop and explore your child’s language skills. Vocabulary: The following words are new vocabulary your child has learned while reading “Ramona Forever”: glanced, comfort, longed, contagious, prescription, attention, & unexpected. Discuss the meanings of these words. Then play a game with your child in which you take turns giving clues that suggest one of the words. Your clues can be words, objects, ore gestures. Talent Show: On November 18th, our class will have our talent show. We will be watching eleven acts presented by individuals or groups. The main purpose of the show is to have fun, just like Beany learned in The Talent Show. Language: We will be working on a Daily Language Practice this week using sentences from Ramona Forever. The students will be editing the sentences and writing them correctly. All the language skills will be reviewed this week. Spelling: Lesson 12: song, law, because, soft, dawn, crawl, lost, taught, long, pause, frost, lawn, hawk, laundry, author Challenge Words: dollar, prefix, plural, Illinois, noun A pretest will be given on Monday, November 17th. Spelling book pages 47-49 will be due on Thursday, November 20th. The post test will be on Friday, November 21st.

Third Grade Math: During the next few weeks, our math class will be learning about multiplication and division of whole numbers. You can expect to see work that provides practice in multiplying with and dividing by numbers 2 through 10. We will also be learning about the special properties and rules that apply to 0 and 1.
Problem solving strategies of solving multi-step problems, making an organized list, and finding patterns using a table will be discussed and practiced in small group and whole group lessons. The vocabulary for this unit includes the following words: multiplication, array, Commutative Property, factors, product, multiple, square number, Associative Property, divide, division, quotient, divisor, dividend, fact, & equal groups. Division Facts and Fact Families Once students realize the relationship between multiplication and division, they can use the multiplication table to solve division problems. To find 15 / 3, find the row representing the divisor, 3. Move across the row to find thee column that shows the dividend, 15. Follow the column to the top to find the quotient, 5. So 15 / 3 = 5. This is the number sentence or equation. Another way to help students understand the relationship between multiplication and division is to ask to write fact families for the entries in the multiplication table. For the product 42, the fact family consists of four equations or number sentences. 6 X 7 = 42 7 X 6 = 42 42 / 6 = 7 42 / 7 = 6 Given this fact family, the problem 42 / 7 = _____ can be rewritten as 7 X ____ = 42. In this way, a mastery of the multiplication facts becomes a tool for solving division facts as well. Our classroom goal is to complete 100 math facts accurately in five minutes. All students have moved on to multiplication facts, division facts or mixed multiplication & division facts. Please encourage the students to practice their multiplication & division facts during this unit. We will continue the addition and subtraction facts once we complete Unit 4. We will continue taking timed tests to increase the accuracy and speed of each individual student at least twice a week. The fact tests this week will be given on Tuesday and Thursday.
*********************************************************************** Science Our next science unit will be on our natural resources and conserving energy. *********************************************************************** Social Studies Our class is completing our social studies unit on Friday, November 21st with the unit test. The study guide, notes, and textbook will be helpful in reviewing the concepts. There is also an additional review on the download section of this web site that will practice the concepts and vocabulary that will be tested on Friday. We will take a break from Social Studies to complete our next Science unit on resources and conserving energy.
