Mrs. Dana Wright - 3rd (Send e-mail)
Dear Parents,
Third Grade is an exciting and challenging year. I am very excited to work with your child and watch them learn and grow.
It is important that you support your child during their moments of strength and weakness. Please refrain from doing your child's school work for them. It is important that they work through it and understand the material.
Please keep in mind that I do what's best for the students in my room, not what works for others. I want to make sure that the students that walk into my room are getting the best possible education.
When you look up your child's grades on-line, please keep in mind that because I differentiate activities and assignments in the classroom, your child may not have a grade for every assignment listed.
Listed below are the skills and concepts being covered. You have all the skills for the entire theme, chapter, or unit, so you can review and preview at your convenience.
***** READING *****
We will be reading The Stories Julian Tells, The Talen Show, Centerfield Ballhawk, and Romana Forever. In addition to the named stories, we will be reading various novels in a whole group and small group setting.
Reading Skills being covered are comprehension, author's purpose, sequencing, following directions, drawing conclusions, making predictions, literary forms, narrative elements, word relationships, decoding and answering comprehension questions pertaining to the stories.
***** LANGUAGE *****
Language Skills being covered are plural possessive nouns, plural nouns, abbreviations, singular pronouns, plural pronouns, subject pronouns, and object pronouns. We will also cover various types of writing.
***** SPELLING *****
Spelling skills are words with possessives, plurals, /o/, /oo/, and /ar/.
***** MATH *****
I skip around in Math, so we are currently on Unit 1. Unit 1 will cover place value, comparing ordering, and rounding whole numbers. It will also cover money.
We will not be taking a chapter test after each chapter in Math. Instead, I am going to focus on weekly assessments to check for understanding. So, your child will be taking a math quiz weekly on the covered material. At the end of the unit, they will take a unit test.
Please continue to practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts. If possible, continue to practice time and temperature using real-life examples. We will be taking timed tests each day. Please ask your child what test they are on and monitor their progress. Encorage them to practice at home.
***** Social Studies *****
We are going to focus on map skills while we work more intensly on Science.
***** Science *****
We are currently working on Chapter 3 Animals.
***** ISAT Practice *****
We are working on ISAT Practice a few times a week. It is never too early to begin preparing the students. This will hopefully relieve some of the anxiety that gets associated with ISAT. It will also prepare them for the type of questions, the type of content, and the overall structure of the test. The students will be working out of ISAT Coach Books and ISAT Finish Line Books. The skills being covered will be a nice review and will also be a great preview of what is to come.
I do not give an abundance of homework each week. On days when homework is light, please work on reviewing skills and concepts at home. Also, provide real life learning opportunities for your child.
I look forward to an outstanding year with your child. If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
