Kathy Yakaitis - Speech (Send e-mail)
Welcome to the Speech and Language Website at Arbury Hills. I have listed several activities that you may like to do to enhance your child's speech and language development. You will also find more information though the American Speech, Hearing, and Language Association (ASHA) website at www.asha.org/public/ Here is a list of activities: 1. Read often to your child. Let him or her retell the story. Discuss the objects, people, and places in the story. Talk about the title, main idea, and the sequence of events. 2. When holding or pointing to an object or picture, ask the child, "What is it?", "When or where do you use it?", and "What is it used for?" 3. Relate newly learned vocabulary words and concepts to your child's everyday experiences. 4. Have your child keep a log or journal for special events. Have him or her write down what happened and draw a picture in a spiral notebook. The writing process and ideas are important! Don't grade or correct spelling, punctuation, etc., at this time. Just encourage the writing. 5. Give an appropriate model to your child's incorrect grammar or syntax usage. For example, if your child says, "Him going home." you may say,"Yes, he is going home." 6. Model and expand your child's use of a short sentence. For example, if your child says,"The boy ran." you may say, "Yes, the boy ran to the park." 7. Provide cues and word associations for your child who may have word-finding difficulties. For example, if your child is trying to say the word,"frog", provide cues, such as, "It's green, it lives in water, it hops." Try to allow the child to come up with the word himself with these cues. 8. Help your child learn to look for similarities and differences. Discuss how pictures of things can be alike and different. For example, a dog and cat are alike because they have 2 ears, a tail, 4 legs, etc. They are different because one meows and one barks, etc. This also gives the child the opportunity to use many kinds of words and sentences. 9. Label or name as many objects as possible while at the grocery store, in the car, mall, zoo, etc. Have your child keep a notebook with a different category on each page, such as "FOOD," "CLOTHES," "ANIMALS,""VEHICLES," "OCCUPATIONS," etc. Find as many pictures as possible for each category. 10. Play with your child the game, "I'm Going on a Trip" and alphabetically add on another item they are taking along after repeating all that has been previously taken. For example, "I'm going on a trip and I'm taking an apple." The next person says, "I'm taking an apple and banana. etc. Have fun together with these activities! If there is a question or concern you may have regarding your child's communication skills, please don't hesitate to contact me here at School. | |
