Here are some ideas to help support reading for your child at home.
Read to your child daily. Choose interesting novels or picture books. Set aside time each day to read to your child. Even when children can read on their own, they benefit from listening to others read.
Set aside daily reading time for your family. Choose a time each day when all the family members read. You can read books, magazines, newspapers, comic books, or poetry. A daily reading time shows your child that reading is important.
Talk about the books your child is reading. Ask questions. What is your favorite part and why? What would you do and why? Who is your favorite character and why?
Have your child read recipes, sort mail, and help with other household chores.
Visit the library regularly. Look into programs for children at the local library.
Play word games. Do crossword puzzles and play games such as Hangman, Scrabble, and Boggle.
Give your child books as gifts to promote a love of reading.
Write notes and letters to family members. This type of writing will give your child a reason to read.
Connect favorite TV shows, movies, and hobbies with books.
Enjoy and promote reading for your child.
