Reading Tips: *Have your child read at least 15-20 minutes per day. The types of materials can vary, but should not be exclusively one type of material, such as comics and magazines. Reading practice builds fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
*Read to your child and with your child. Vary the daily reading so that sometimes it is silent, sometimes you read to your child, sometimes your child reads to you, and sometimes you take turns reading a story. Ask questions about what has been read to assess comprehension.
*Encourage your child to use context clues to figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. Don't always tell him/her what it means.
*Ask your child to bring home his/her reading book to reread stories. This activity builds comprehension skills, vocabulary, and fluency.
*Let your child see YOU reading! |
