Mrs. Maranto’s Classroom News Week of December 1, 2008
This Week in Fifth Grade:
SPELLING: We will have a test over Lesson 11 on Friday. The bonus words are orchids, slaughter, clambered, knowledge, and habitat.
Math: This week we will continue to work on chapter 4 and will focus on multiplying and dividing decimals. Several children are having difficulty with this skill due to the fact that they cannot quickly recall the math facts. Please, help your child practice the math facts at home. This is a skill they will need for the rest of their life.
Math Project: Next week the children will work on a holiday related math project. They will be using holiday catalogs and flyers from the newspaper to “shop” for a family of five on a budget of $1,000.00. They will learn how to calculate tax and practice using the decimal concepts we have learned about in Chapter 4. I am asking for donations of catalogs and newspaper flyers to prepare for this project. I would like each child to bring four or five catalogs or newspaper flyers to school by Monday, December 8th.
We will work on the project in school next Tuesday and Wednesday during math class. The final project will be due the following Tuesday, December 16th.
READING/WRITING: During the month of December we will read several stories that are biographies. This week the children will write a biography about the important person they interviewed. They will share their final copies with the class on Friday. Also, the children will begin work on their “Young Author’s” story. We will work on their stories in class. The final copy will be due in early January.
