Mrs. Jenna OCallaghan - 1st  (Send e-mail) Dear Parents, There have been many new and exciting things happening in First Grade! The students have been working hard and learning about Johnny Appleseed and Christopher Columbus. Everyone has been doing a great job on their projects. In Reading we have been working on short vowel sounds. Please continue to practice these sounds at home and in their readings. We also began to work on the setting of a story. If you are reading a story with your child, ask them where the story is taking place. The students know that if you get a good picture of the story in your head, it will be easier to remember what happens. In Math we have been working on making and reading different types of graphs. The students know about tally marks, pictographs, and bar graphs. We took a test on this chapter this past week and all of the students did a great job. The next chapter that we started is on using different addition strategies. This chapter will go quickly and we will be having a test next week. Please make sure you are practicing all of the addition strategies at home. Starting next week, I will not be sending home your child’s pretest unless they spell all of the words correctly and are going to be taking the challenge test. If your child does not bring home the pretest with a new list stapled to it just have them study the regular spelling list. Again, please do not have your child “study” for the pretest. Students who receive the challenge words should be the students who already know how to spell the words without practicing.
