Computer Class 2008-2009
Goals: Goals for this class are based on the National Educational Technology Standards for Students.
Students will be able to:
1. Identify the generations of computer history and describe key components of each.
2. Use Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets and graphs of data.
3. Create publication quality documents using Microsoft Publisher.
4. Use the LOGO programming language to create a small computer program.
5. Use a HTML generator to create a web site.
Assignments: All assignments are to be completed in class. Each topic will have several small milestone assignments as well as a culminating project. Students will also receive a grade for participation. Participation points are earned for answering questions during presentations as well as for completing daily bell ringers. Culminating projects will be graded based on a rubric provided to the students when the assignment is given.
2008-2009 Curriculum:
1. Computer history unit: generations, key components, historical reference.
2. Keyboarding unit: posture, hand placement, two hands.
3. Microsoft Excel: dropdown menus, buttons, formatting, graphs.
4. Microsoft Publisher: menus, buttons, creating a menu, advertisement and a webpage.
5. LOGO programming: basic commands, creating a program.
6. Internet: searching, connecting, safety.
Items of Interest: 1. The classroom has 30 student computers. They are HP Compac and run at 2.6 GHz. They use Windows XP as an operating system. Each computer has a 15-inch LCD monitor and 1 GB of RAM. The computers have CD-RW drives as well as a USB port.
2. There is an overhead LCD for demonstration purposes.
3. Assignments are designed to allow for a wide range of student experience and prior knowledge.
4. All assignments and rubrics will be posted on the school website.
5. This is one of two seven-week computer courses. Students will get both classes in the two years at Summit Hill. The second course includes: Word, Computer Parts, PowerPoint, Internet searching and keyboarding.
