RED RIBBON WEEK: During the last week of October (October 27th to 31st), many schools, including Hilda Walker School, will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, when students pledge to be drug-free. As adults, we need to continue all year long to make our message clear to children: “Using illegal drugs, including cigarettes and alcohol is bad for children.”
Dr. Paul Coleman in his book, "How to Say it to Your Kids," relates that as children approach the age of thirteen, drugs, alcohol and cigarettes become more available through friends and acquaintances. About 25% of children between the ages of ten and fourteen know someone who has used inhalants to get high. What can parents do to help prevent their own children from abusing drugs or alcohol? Your first step is to let your children know that you feel that using drugs and alcohol is wrong for children and that you will not allow it.
