Mr. James Kohlbacher - 6 (Send e-mail)
Is it possible I have been blessed again with a wonderful group of students? Everyone is working hard and getting used to a higher level of responsibility. The parents can be very proud of the effort and behavior of their child and I am looking forward to another great year
What follows is a general plan for the core subjects:
Math
Our year begins with number sense, patterns, and algebraic thinking. Each student should have mastered basic skills by now and be ready for higher thinking skills. Chapter 2 covers decimal operations and scientific notation. Chapter 3 reviews mean, median, and mode and also emphasizes graphs.
It is important to remember that 100-200 points are collected each chapter, especially at the end of one. The student can always look ahead to end of chapter assignments. This enables them to identify problem areas and practice skills. Unfortunately, many students do not do this.
Please remember that the classroom is open for assistance M-F at 7:30 a.m.
Social Studies
We started off the year reviewing map skills. The number of skills that can be acquired by studying maps is amazing. The students will be looking at hundreds of maps and graphs this year so these skills are of utmost importance.
Our textbook concentrates on ancient civilizations and begins with people of the stone age. We will focus on the information in the textbook and supplement it with workbook pages. Various activities will be assigned and these are designed to promote interest in history. Participation in class is important if one is to fully appreciate the topic of study.
Reading
Our first two units are titled "Personal Best" and "Friends to the Rescue." These themes provide an opportunity to learn that each person can discover rewards that come from bringing out the best in themselves. We discuss vocabulary words, listen to a tape of the story, take a comprehension test, and complete the accompanying workbook pages. We are also reading the "Joey Pigza" series which has been a huge success. It is the story of 12 year old boy that suffers from ADHD and an extremely dysfunctional family.
Time is also spent working with our SRA reading laboratory. This lab allows students to read at their own level and practice a variety of reading and language skills.
English/Spelling
The language and spelling programs go hand in hand with our reading program. Much time is spent on grammar, usage, and mechanics. The SRA program also has grammar lessons built into each reading activity so our students are constantly exposed to proper writng and speaking skills.
Writing skills are stressed throughout the year and students will be required to write longer papers.
The next few spelling units provide work with vowel spellings, unstressed endings, and homophones. We start off the week with a pretest which determines how often we write the misspelled ones. On Thursday the three workbook pages are graded and the week culminates with our posttest on Friday. It looks as if the students will be very busy campers the rest of the school year.
This is a poem we end each day with as it reminds us that our time together is very short...
I Wish You Enough
I wish you enough sun to make your attitude bright
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive
I wish you enough pain so the smallest joys appear big
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all you possess
I wish you enough "Hellos" to get through the final "good-bye"
It takes a minute to find a special person
An hour to appreciate them
A day to love them but then
An entire life to forget
It's a short message to let them know you'll never forget them...
P.S. Where do you find a legless dog? | |
