Mrs. Muller's September News Mrs. Patricia Muller - Gr.3  (Send e-mail)

Thank you to all who were able to attend Open House! It was a pleasure meeting all of you and I know we will have a great working relationship and make this a profitable and happy year for your child.

Language Arts
We continue reading from our text book as well as guided reading books at your child's reading level. Our focus is comprehension, using, among other things, context
to confirm meaning. We are also working on writing good sentences and differentiating between statements and questions. We will also introduce exclamations and commands. Children should be able to identify the type of sentence they are reading and be able to write an example of each of the four types of sentences.
We are also trying to write several times each week on topics chosen from a list/and those of choice.
After our field trip, we will be writing about it, so excourage your child to try to pay attention to what is being presented and important parts of the trip, as well as their favorite parts and characters.

Due to the holiday, there will be no Spelling this week.

Math
As we complete Chapter 1, we will be reviewing and practicing place value and writing numbers in three different ways. After testing this chapter, we will continue with comparing and ordering numbers and then rounding two, three, and four, digit numbers.
It is important that your child 'Be Responsible' and pay attention in class. Material is not difficult, but paying attention is imperative. Also please remember that homework is a practice for what was taught in class that day. It will never be anything your child has not been exposed to and practiced in class. Don't hesitate to contact me if homework is exceptionally 'painful', or is taking more than about 30 minutes.
Please remember to practice basic addition/subtraction facts with your child every night. It is very important that they learn these facts.
Watch assignment book for test dates.

Science
We continue to familiarize your child with scientific tools and the scientific process. There are some importnat terms that will be revisited often and the students are responsible for understanding them. Our next topic will be plants.

Social Studies
Our first unit in this area is about communities and how people live and work together. We will also be studying the seven continents and the four oceans. Children will be expected to recognize them and their location in the world, as well as in which hemispheres they can be found.

Remember our field trip to
Isle a la Cache on Wednesday, Sept. 8th.

NWEA Testing begins this week and continues for several weeks. Check your child's assignment book for details and dates for our classroom testing.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me by note, phone call, or e-mail.
