NJHS Introduction LetterSummer of 2010
Dear Parents/Guardians of Seventh Grade Students:
As we begin the 2010-2011 school year, it is time to review the requirements for induction in to the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Membership in the NJHS is the highest honor given to a junior high student and carries with it a distinction recognized nation-wide. This organization seeks to create enthusiasm for superior scholarship, develop citizenship, promote leadership and instill exemplary qualities of character. Our top ten percent of our seventh grade students are eligible for membership. Membership in the organization not only recognizes students for their accomplishments academically, but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
Students in the seventh grade may work towards induction into the NJHS by fulfilling the following requirements:
A 3.75 grade point cumulative average must be earned. This is calculated through our district data system and officially appears on the transcript. The calculations will be done for all seventh graders immediately following the third quarter marking period in March of 2011. If a student has achieved a 3.75 or higher for the three quarters at Summit Hill Junior High School, has maintained a clean discipline file, and has joined 3 or more activities,(outside activities may be considered...see sponsor for details) he or she will receive an invitation to join the NJHS. Furthermore, these students are expected to be outstanding in the area of scholarship, service, character, leadership and citizenship throughout seventh grade. All five areas are of equal importance in determining membership.
Students must exemplify good citizenship and character. A review of student records will be done before consideration in the NJHS. Students with discipline referrals will not have the opportunity to join.
Upon invitation to join, students must complete an application requiring a brief essay and required signatures.
The student must be an active participant in at least 3 extra curricular activities. One may be recent outside participation. Please see the guidance counselor or NJHS advisor if additional activities are needed to meet this requirement.
The faculty council of the NJHS will review the application for admittance.
Those seventh grade students who earn membership will be inducted in a ceremony to be held in April of 2011.
Once students have earned the distinction, they will be required to obtain service hours both in the school setting as well as in the community. Students are also required to attend meetings and participate in the group project.
In closing, for students to maintain membership after induction, new members will be expected to maintain qualification standards (academic, disciplinary, activity participation), complete 40 service hours and participate in the group service project. Details will be shared with these students as they enter eighth grade.
It is indeed an honor and privilege to be recognized as a National Junior Honor Society member at the graduation ceremony. Please encourage your child to strive toward this goal.
Sincerely,
Beth R. Lind
Principal
