From the Principal
ISAT March 2 - 12, 2010Dear Walker Parents/Guardians,
March 2 through March 12, 2010!
Testing! Testing! Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT)!
Our students need to be in school, and arrive on time!
We will be giving your child state-required achievement tests from Tuesday, March 2 through Friday, March 12, 2010. ALL Walker students will be tested in Reading, Math and Writing. The results of the testing will be available in Fall of 2010.
You can help your child do his/her best on the test by:
*making sure that your child attends school on all days of testing
*making sure your child arrives ON TIME each day of testing (by 8:20 a.m.)
*making sure your child gets a good night’s sleep each night before testing
*providing breakfast each morning of testing
*reminding your child to ask the teacher questions if he/she does not understand the test directions
*letting your child know that you have confidence in his/her ability to do his/her best
*advising your child not to worry about the test, just do the best he/she can do!
Please call your child’s teacher if you want additional information or have further questions about the 2010 ISAT. Specific information and sample tests are available online at www.isbe.net

Walker Cares 2009-2010 Giving InitiativeSt. Jude Math-A-Thon
During the month of October, Walker students participated in the St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon. Sixth grade teacher, Ms. Besse reports that this annual event was again very successful, and the donations (over $2,500) collected by Walker students will certainly make a difference in the lives of the children receiving medical care at St. Jude’s Hospital.
Walker Cares: November through February
Our 2009-2010 Walker Cares Giving Initiative continues, and with the help of our Student Council, we will focus on several local organizations that provide for the basic needs of families in our school-community. Our giving initiative plan is as follows:
November 2009: Frankfort Township Food Pantry (food & other
supplies)
December 2009: Together We Cope-Tinley Park (clothing)
January 2010: Tinley Park Food Pantry
February 2010: Frankfort Area Jaycees & Together We Cope
(school supplies)
During the month of November 2009, Walker Cares Giving Initiative will focus on collecting items needed by the Frankfort Township Food Pantry. We are providing a list of suggested items. If you are able to contributing any non-perishable food and other supplies to meet the basic needs of those in need, your donations are greatly appreciated. Our student council representatives will be active each day as they collect and organize the items that our Walker students and families contribute.
See the November 2009 Walker Newsletter for a list of needed items provided by the Frankfort Township Food Pantry.

• Students receive “Specials” 3 times per week….one grading quarter for each Art, Computers, Music, and Spanish
• Student lunch/intramural time totals 40 minutes per day….20 minutes to eat in the multipurpose room and 20 minutes of structured activity in the gym (5th grade: 11:20-12:00 and 6th grade: 12:05-12:45)
• Buses arrive at the back of the building and students will be supervised in the common area until the bell dismissing them to classrooms (NOTE: Students will gather by their homeroom teacher in the gym on the first day.)
• Walkers, bike riders, and car riders enter/exit the front doors of the building. Students should arrive between 8:10-8:20 (tardy bell).
• REMINDERS…..
o Dress code: Students’ dress for school, school activities, and school-related trips should be reasonable, reflect good taste, and be agreeable to the school sponsor/administration. Clothing must be appropriate. No sagging shorts or pants. Pants must be securely fastened at the waist. Pants with excessive shredding or holes are not appropriate. Skirts and shorts must be to the fingertips regardless of additional leg wear underneath. Necklines must be 3” from the collarbone area. School (SHJH/HW) specific pajama pants may only be worn on designated spirit days. Male and female students must wear clothing that completely covers the body from the shoulder to the mid-thigh region. Clothing made of spandex or similar material (biking shorts, jerseys, etc.) may not be worn unless other clothing is worn over it from shoulder to mid-thigh. Tube tops, halters, see-through shirts, mesh shirts, tank tops, muscle shirts, sleeveless shirts, spaghetti straps, crop tops, or tops which expose cleavage or midriff will not be allowed. Appropriate footwear must be worn to school (no shower shoes, flip-flops, high heeled/platform shoes, shoes with built in wheels, slippers, or any other shoes that may cause markings or damage to floors or create a disturbance). Due to daily physical activity including P.E., overall student safety and students using stairs, students are strongly encouraged to wear shoes with backs.
o Cell phones: The use of cell phones at school (as well as school activities and school-related trips) is detrimental to the academic climate because it takes valuable time away from instruction and creates disciplinary problems. Students’ cell phones should be turned off and NOT JUST SILENCED while inside the building before, during, and after the school day. Cell phones must be stored in backpacks and not in student possession during the school day.
We look forward to seeing you again on Wednesday, August 19th!
