NWEA Testing September 7-24, 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We thank you for attending Open House. We hope you have a better understanding of our school/classroom procedures, curriculum and student services/activities. If you have not already scheduled a conference with your child’s teacher for November 1st or 2nd, please call the teacher as soon as possible.

Walker students will begin taking the NWEA – MAP test (Northwest Evaluation Association – Measures of Academic Progress) on Tuesday, September 7th. This test provides the school district, teachers, parents and students with valuable information relating to each student’s ACADEMIC GROWTH. The academic areas to be assessed are reading, language arts and math. The tests will be administered three times during the school year: September 2010, January 2011 and April 2011.

The September testing window at Walker will begin Tuesday, Sept. 7th (through Sept. 24). The testing window will be open for three weeks in order for all of our students to participate. Your child’s teacher has specific dates and times scheduled for the test to be administered each week. Each student will be taking the online tests in one of the computer labs under the direction of the classroom teacher. It is important that each student understands the purpose of this testing, and that he/she takes part in monitoring his/her ACADEMIC GROWTH.

We know that our Walker parents/guardians will provide the support needed to ensure that our students do their best on the NWEA-MAP tests, as you always do, by making sure your children:

 Attend school each day
 Arrive on time (in the classroom by 8:20 a.m. ready for instruction)
 Get plenty of rest
 Eat a nourishing breakfast
 Have a positive, can-do attitude
 Understand the importance of monitoring “academic growth”

We encourage you to visit www.nwea.org and search for Parent Toolkit.

Thank you for your cooperation as we begin the 2010-2011 school year!

Sincerely,
Ms. Jan Zevkovich, Principal
Mrs. Christine Hudziak, Assistant Principal

First Day Welcome!

Dear Walker Parents,

It was so wonderful to greet your children this morning on the first day of the 2010-2011 school year! The teachers and students joined us in the gym. We spoke to the students about our three basic expectations at Walker: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. Following these three expectations will ensure success at Walker Intermediate School…no doubt about it!

The Walker teachers and staff members look forward to working with you to help your child learn and grow!

Sincerely,

Ms. Zevkovich, Principal
Mrs. Hudziak, Assistant Principal

Welcome to Walker!

August 2010

Dear Walker Parents and Students,

The first day of school is Thursday, August 19, 2010. School will be in session from 8:20 to 11:30 a.m. (1/2 day). Our regular, full-day schedule starts Friday, August 20, 2010 from 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.

Sincerely,

Jan Zevkovich, Principal
Christine Hudziak, Assistant Principal

Welcome to Hilda Walker!

• 5th grade homerooms are located on the first floor
• 6th grade homerooms are located on the second floor

• Students receive Physical Education 3 times per week (make sure to have gym shoes and wear a t-shirt on these days)

• Students receive “Specials” 3 times per week….one grading quarter for each Art, Computers, Music, and Spanish

• Student lunch/intramural time totals 40 minutes per day….20 minutes to eat in the multipurpose room and 20 minutes of structured activity in the gym (5th grade: 11:20-12:00 and 6th grade: 12:05-12:45)

• Buses arrive at the back of the building (NOTE: Students will gather by their homeroom teacher in the gym on the first day.)

• Walkers, bike riders, and car riders enter/exit the front doors of the building. Students should arrive between 8:10-8:20 (tardy bell).

• REMINDERS…..

o Dress code: Students’ dress for school, school activities, and school-related trips should be reasonable, reflect good taste, and be agreeable to the school sponsor/administration. Clothing must be appropriate. No sagging shorts or pants. Pants must be securely fastened at the waist. Pants with excessive shredding or holes are not appropriate. Skirts and shorts must be to the fingertips regardless of additional leg wear underneath. Necklines must be 3” from the collarbone area. School (SHJH/HW) specific pajama pants may only be worn on designated spirit days. Male and female students must wear clothing that completely covers the body from the shoulder to the mid-thigh region. Clothing made of spandex or similar material (biking shorts, jerseys, etc.) may not be worn unless other clothing is worn over it from shoulder to mid-thigh. Tube tops, halters, see-through shirts, mesh shirts, tank tops, muscle shirts, sleeveless shirts, spaghetti straps, crop tops, or tops which expose cleavage or midriff will not be allowed. Appropriate footwear must be worn to school (no shower shoes, flip-flops, high heeled/platform shoes, shoes with built in wheels, slippers, or any other shoes that may cause markings or damage to floors or create a disturbance). Due to daily physical activity including P.E., overall student safety and students using stairs, students are strongly encouraged to wear shoes with backs.

o Cell phones: The use of cell phones at school (as well as school activities and school-related trips) is detrimental to the academic climate because it takes valuable time away from instruction and creates disciplinary problems. Students’ cell phones should be turned off and NOT JUST SILENCED while inside the building before, during, and after the school day. Cell phones must be stored in backpacks and not in student possession during the school day.

We look forward to seeing you again on Thursday, August 19th!
Ms. Zevkovich, Principal
Mrs. Hudziak, Assistant Principal
