School Improvement
School Improvement The students at Frankfort Square School continue to improve in all curricular areas as evidenced by the School Report Card. The goal of the staff at Frankfort Square School is to provide continuous academic improvement for our students. The implementation of programs and activities that support best practices, the development of standards aligned classrooms, and professional development for staff support academic improvement for our students.
In reading, the continuation of small group instruction through guided reading groups as well as whole class grade level instruction supports individual student needs while maintaining high expectations for all students. A strong focus on vocabulary development will increase comprehension. All grades will emphasize extended response to reading through discussion and book reports at first grade, introducing written responses in second grade and refining skills in third and fourth grades.
Writing will continue to be supported across the content areas. Through modeled strategies, graphic organizers, and rubrics to assess writing, students will apply skills to narrative, expository and persuasive prompts. Real life writing skills will be implemented as students write letters to pen pals across the grade levels.
Math continues to be an area of strength at Frankfort Square School. Instructional strategies will support problem solving with a focus on analyzing problems to determine the appropriate strategies to solve each problem as well as writing an explanation of the process.
Continued improvement in science will be supported through a focus on the areas of life science and physical science to develop a greater understanding of how living things function, adapt and change, as well as interact with each other and their environment. We will incorporate activities to develop greater understanding of the properties of matter and energy and the relationship between them. In addition, nonfiction sources will be incorporated into reading.
Although no longer assessed in fourth grade, we will continue to support student achievement in social studies by implementing the Social Studies Curriculum Maps at all grade levels and assessing students with the District Criterion Tests to monitor student growth. We will also be integrating nonfiction social studies topics into reading.
Through participation in the implementation of Standards Aligned Classrooms, our staff is setting target goals for student achievement, developing lessons, assessments and student friendly rubrics, all aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards. Students are becoming more accountable for their learning and understanding that they are a partner in their education.
It is our goal to increase the percent of students at Frankfort Square School meeting and exceeding standards in all content areas by implementing and integrating these activities across the curriculum throughout the year. Through professional development at the building and district level, teachers are supported in their efforts to improve instruction.
