From the Principal
Welcome to Summit Hill District 161’s kindergarten website. Whether you are a prospective parent, a friend, or a new member of the #161 community, this site will provide you with information about the kindergarten program. We have a full day program and a half-day program both housed at Dr. Julian Rogus Elementary School.
We would like to welcome you to Rogus Kindergarten. This is a place where you will see happy faces and hear children’s laughter from the playground, the hallways and classrooms. The building resounds with the energy of young voices.
In the full day program the primary objective is to provide children with the opportunity to engage in activities that enrich the curriculum through art, movement, music, and experiences outside of the classroom. This is the ‘luxury of time’ in an extended day.
The half-day kindergarten program has the ‘limits of time’. The curricular objectives of the program remain consistent with the full day program. It allows for the varied developmental stages of the early learner. At the same time, the innovative teaching strategies address the individual needs of our students.
Both programs are witness to the growth of self-esteem by someone zipping their own coat or helping a classmate with his/her book bag. Our students gain self-confidence by being leader for the day, taking the attendance to the office or having others call him/her by name. Only in kindergarten do you get to encourage the gamut of career choices – paleontologist, fireman, plumber lawyer or veterinarian with years to plot the course.
We are a community of administrators, teachers and staff dedicated to excellence in the education of the whole child. The kindergarten teacher nurture and guide students in an environment that is alive with five/six year olds.
