Rogus Reporter-May/June

From the Desk of Mr. Ruffalo, Principal

As we enter the month of May, we come to the end of the 2007-2008 school year.
This year is a bit different than other years. This year we will be ending the school year knowing that many of our students and staff will be heading over to Mary Drew School. All of these children and staff will be missed. We wish them the best as they end their time at Dr. Julian Rogus School and begin at Mary Drew.

Also, there are many children and families that we will be welcoming to DJR for the first time in the 2008-2009 school year from Arbury Hills. We look forward to welcoming you to your new school next year. But for now, we hope you will enjoy the hours and the days you have at your school and look forward to the summer.

Parent Days are Coming!
As a tradition that started a few years back, parents are invited to have a picnic lunch with their child during the month of May. The parents of first and second graders are welcome to attend DJR on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. The parents of third and fourth graders are welcome to attend DJR on Thursday, May, 15, 2008. Parents arrive a few minutes before their child’s lunch time an depart at the end of their lunch. Look for a invitation that went home recently for more details.

Presidential Awards Ceremony for Qualified Fourth Graders
A few years ago the U.S. Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School Principals developed a partnership to create the Presidential Education Awards Program. The Presidential Outstanding Academic Excellence Award and the Presidential Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.

Fourth grade students qualify for the Presidential Outstanding Academic Excellence Award if they have a G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher. These students must display high motivation, initiative integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities and or excellent judgement. Also, students must have scored at the 85th percentile or higher in math and reading on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test.

Students who qualify for the second award the Presidential Outstanding Academic Achievement Award must show outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment, or intellectual growth in academic areas.

The parents of all fourth grade students who qualify for these awards, will be receiving an special invitation to attend a ceremony honoring your child. Invitations will be going home shortly. Also, Dr. Julian Rogus and Mr. Pain will be on hand to give the awards to these students. Congratulations to all of our fourth grade students who qualify for this prestigious award.

It's summer -- that time of year when teachers bid farewell to students, hoping their gleefully escaping charges don't forget everything they've learned during the school year. It's also the time of year when nervous parents take on the challenge of keeping their children physically busy and mentally active during long summer days. To help those efforts, here are some ideas parents can do with their children.
*Parents who read usually have children who read.
* Spend more time outside and less time in front of the TV. Go bike riding. 
* What two letters in the alphabet take up all of your time? (TV)
*Set up a time each week when you and your child can read.
*Read aloud to your child. By showing them you love and enjoy reading, so will they.
*Share with your child what you have read.
* Plan a weekly trip to the library.
* Research vacations with your child. Get them involved in planning the traveling route.
* Go the library and research the state and area you are traveling too.
* Have your child write in their journal on a regular basis, Share thoughts with them from your journal.
* Keep your children well hydrated in the summer heat. Use sunscreen. 
* Have your child complete a calendar for activities you have planned for the summer.
* Teach your child to cook using step by step recipes, measurement and safety tips.
* Go on a walk and teach your children about the kinds of trees, insects, and animals in the habitat.
* Here are a few websites you can visit with your child.
* Visit PBS Kids http://www.pbs.org/kids/index.html PBS offers kids the opportunity to learn while they enjoy a variety of fun, interactive experiences. At this site, kids can get advice, create an interactive story, learn lots of fascinating facts about a number of topics, or choose from nearly four dozen games featuring characters from PBS shows.

Visit http://www.popsicle.com The Popsicle people crafted this delicious site to help add a little cool to the fun of summer. Skip the advertising in Popsicle, Popsicle, Popsicle and head straight for Fun. Crafty kids will love the Stick Art, which includes directions and templates.
Visit BoatSafeKids
http://www.boatsafe.com/kids International Marine Educators, Inc. sponsors this site, full of summer safety tips and great learning activities. At this lively and visually appealing site, students will learn about personal flotation devices, distress signals, storm warnings, and many other aspects of boating safety. They can also see their names spelled out using nautical flags, watch animated tutorials on knot-tying, discover how to calculate the distance to the horizon and much more. This site can keep even the most ardent landlubber busy throughout the summer!
