From the Principal
From The Desk of Mr. RuffaloJuly 29, 2010
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year.
A special Spirit Wear Shirt will be available for purchase this year. Students will be receiving a special treat and all of our students will be a part of the Wheel of Wisdom Assembly. Also, during Open House, make sure to check out the LRC. We have two murals on our walls! A local artist painted murals to celebrate our birthday. Thank you to our RESCO volunteers and parents for helping to make this school year a memorable one.
It has been very exciting for us as we prepare for your child’s return on August 19, 2010 from 9:00 A.M. - Noon. The first full day of school will be on August 20, 2010. School hours are 9:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. Every Tuesday, students will be dismissed at 3:15 PM.
To help you and your child have an easier transition on the first day of school, our building will be open on the following date and time for you to find your child’s classroom and drop off their supplies. During this time, I will be available to talk with parents. No formal meeting is schedule, so feel free drop by at anytime within the following time frames.
First and Second Grades Wednesday August 11, 2010 9:00-10:00 A.M.
Third and Fourth Grades Wednesday August 11, 2010 10:00-11:00A.M.
I hope that you and your child can attend at these times. If not, they can bring their supplies with them on the first day of school. Also, please be advised that classroom teachers are not yet working on these dates and will not be able to attend. If you wish to talk with them, you may call them at school or speak with them at our Open House on September 1, 2010.
Below is general information about DJR that you may find helpful.
Office Hours- DJR office hours are from 8:30 am to 3:50pm.
Teacher Hours –DJR staff are scheduled to work from 8:50 am to 3:50 pm. The teachers are not available during the school hours unless it is during a plan time. Any messages from parents will be placed in the teacher’s mailbox. Teachers are expected to check their mailboxes in the morning, at lunch time, and at the end of the school day. Also, feel free to contact teachers by e-mail.
Hot Lunch and Treat Day- RESCO is sponsoring a Hot Lunch and Treat Day one time per month. An e-mail will be going home to you explaining the items and costs. Please make checks payable to Dr. Julian Rogus School and return to the classroom teacher. For security reasons, cash is not acceptable.
Snack and Lunch- Classroom teachers will be providing opportunity for students to eat a snack during the day. Please look for information from the homeroom teacher about this. Third and fourth grade will be eating lunch and having recess from 12:05 pm to 12:45 pm. First and second grade will have lunch and recess from 12:30 pm to 1:10 pm.
Bus Transportation – All of the students at DJR have an opportunity to be transported by bus to and from school. Parents will be able to find out the bus stops and times on line using Power School username and password as soon as August 6, 2010. Please see e-mail sent by Mr. Pain for any more details. After getting your bus stop assignments, if you have any questions about bus transportation, please speak with Carol Grant or Dean Gerdes at 815 469-9103.
Visiting DJR- Parents are always welcome to visit DJR through out the school day. Any person entering the school is expected to show a Driver’s License or state identification before they will be able to leave the main office and walk into the school. The safety of our students and staff is our utmost concern.
Security-Over the past two years, our district employees and visiting parents have experienced robberies from their vehicles. If you are visiting DJR, please keep all of your valuables, purse, cell phone, GPS, laptops etc, out of sight. In addition, if you notice any unusual behavior around cars or parked in the lot, write down their license plate number and make and model of the car. Stop by or call the school office with this information and we will notify the police immediately.
Tutoring- Parents will be notified by the tutor if you child qualifies for tutoring program. Tutoring time is from 8:00-9:00 am Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Students are expected to be ready for tutoring at 8:00am. Any student who is late or absent for 3 times or more will be dropped for the program. Due to a limited number of students allowed for tutoring, regular and consistent attendance is expected.
Volunteering at DJR – DJR has a history of an abundance of parents volunteering for school events and classrooms. Any volunteer must show identification to enter the building. Any siblings and pre-school age children are not allowed to be with the parent while they are volunteering. Please make other arrangements for them. If a classroom teacher is absent on the day a volunteer is planned in a classroom, the volunteer and teacher will need to re-schedule for another day. Volunteers are to stay in the designated space for volunteering. Due to student safety and classroom instruction, this practice will be enforced.
Student Assignments- On August 6, 2010 parents will be able to find out their child’s classroom assignment by entering in their username and password on Power School. If you have yet to receive a power school username and password, please contact district office.
Grandparent Days- Grandparents will be invited by the classroom teachers to visit their grandchild (ren) during the week of September 27, 2010. Grandparents will have the opportunity to read with their child during the Learning Center Time. An invitation with the time and day will be sent home to the parents from the classroom teachers. We hope you enjoy this change in our Grandparent Day schedule from previous years.
Questions, If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
