STARS Newsletter
March 2010

Hello STARS families! It’s been a long winter but we are almost there….spring is just around the corner!! Hopefully!! 

We here on the STARS board are very busy planning all the spring and end of the year activities. As always, we will be looking for volunteers in the weeks ahead and hope that some of you will join us!! Below is a list of events and activities that we are planning:

-Spring Walk-A-Thon (April 16th – 10 a.m.) This is a favorite among the kids and we will need parents to stand along the route to guide them along.

-Field Day (TBD) - This is a day for the kids to have fun with different games and activities. We need lots of volunteers on this day.

-4th Grade Picnic (TBD) - This is the last party for our 4th graders who will head off to Hilda Walker next year. We are looking for a lot of 4th grade parent volunteers for this day so please keep that in mind.

-STARS April Meeting – This meeting is imperative for parents to attend. We have at least 2 Board positions that need to be filled and we need to have a board in place before the end of the school year. If you would like to be on the board or head up a committee, then PLEASE join us on April 14th at 9:15 a.m. We will be discussing board positions, committee positions and all the end of the year activities. It will be a very important meeting, so please join us!!

Details on all of the above activities and events will go home soon. If there is anything that you would like to discuss, please feel free to contact a board member at the contact info at the bottom of this letter. We would all be very happy to discuss anything with an interested parent.

A big thank you goes out to all the students and parents who sent in Box Tops/Labels for Education. While we are still counting the labels, we did send in our box tops. Your efforts have raised $327.60 for the school!! That’s awesome!!! Keep on sending them in, this is an ongoing fundraiser and all the funds raised go toward the activities and events that are mentioned above. I would also like to give a big THANK YOU to our 4th grade students for cutting and counting almost all of our box tops. You guys are awesome and your help was very much appreciated!!!

AVIC will be having their presentations on March 17th & 18th. The 3rd grade class will learn about Picasso and the 4th grade class will learn about Monet. If there are any parents that are interested in helping out, please contact Mrs. Kohlbacher or a board member and we will be happy to discuss it with you. We will be looking for 2nd grade parents as well because your kids will benefit from AVIC next year. Without volunteers, this program will not be able to continue. PLEASE think about becoming a volunteer. You do NOT need to know anything about art to be involved. It’s a fun project that the kids and teachers really like.

Big Good Luck wishes go out to our Speed Cup Stacking Team who will be stacking at the South West Illinois Speed Stacking Tournament at Chelsea Int. School in Frankfort this Saturday, March 13th!! Good Luck All-Stars!!! We know you’ll do well and we are very proud of all of you!!

Spirit Wear is also still available to order throughout the rest of this month. If you would like to order something, you can print an order form from this website or pick one up from the school office. The last order of the year will be going in on April 1st to ensure we have all the items delivered before the end of the school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Vickie O’Malley at the email address below.

Reminders: Treat Day – Wed. March 17th.
Market Day Pick-Up – Mon. March 22nd.
Hot Lunch – Fri. March 26th.

STARS NEWSLETTER
JANUARY 2010

Happy New Year to all our STARS Families!!! Hope everyone’s year is off to a good start!! We here on the STARS Board are already hard at work making plans for the rest of the year. It will go by fast so let’s get started!! 

MOVIE NIGHT: STARS is sponsoring our first Family Movie Night of the year on Friday, January 15th. The kids took a vote in each of their classrooms on what movie to see and “Monsters, Inc.” was the winner!! Please join us on the 15th at 6:30 p.m. for this awesome Disney movie. Doors will open at 6:20 p.m. and the movie will start at 6:30 p.m. We ask that everyone bring one item per person for the Frankfort Food Pantry to enter. Concessions will be available at low cost with free popcorn refills!! Please be sure to bring a blanket, sleeping bag, pillow, etc. to watch the movie on. ALL children must be accompanied by an adult at all times!! Hope to see you on Friday the 15th!!

BOX TOPS/LABELS: We are starting to wind down on our collection of Box Tops. We need to send in our Box Tops by the end of February so at this time, we are asking for any and all volunteers to help cut and count. This can be done at home. It is not a job you need to be at school for. We are hoping to get at least 2 volunteers per classroom to help out. There will be a note coming home soon asking for volunteers so please think about it, we need your help!! Meanwhile, keep sending in those tops and labels!!  All classrooms will get a popcorn party for their awesome efforts!! Keep up the great work!!
BOOK FAIR: The Winter Book Fair will be held on Monday, January 25th and Tuesday, January 26th. There will be a Family Book Fair Night on Monday, January 25th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Please come on in and join us!!

AVIC: The next AVIC Presentation dates have been set!! We are still looking for volunteers!! We cannot stress enough how important it is to have volunteers. This is such a wonderful program that the kids truly enjoy!! We would like to continue offering it but cannot do it without help from the parents. For the 2nd grade parents, your children will be offered this program next year. If any of you would like to come in and see what it is all about, give us a call, we’d love to have you sit in and check it all out. You do NOT need to know anything about art. We learn as we go as well. ANYONE interested, no matter what grade your child is in, please give a board member or Mrs. Kohlbacher a call or email and we would love to talk with you about it!! The next meeting date for AVIC is Thursday, February 4th at 9:00 a.m. If you can, please join us!! The presentation dates are February 10th for the 3rd graders and February 11th for the 4th graders.

SPRING WALK-A-THON: We are starting to make plans for our annual Spring Walk-A-Thon. We will do the walk-a-thon on Friday, April 16th. Volunteers will be needed for this to line the walking route and cheer our kids on as they walk. Please mark the day on your calendars and plan on joining us that day!! It’s a lot of fun and the kids love it!!

STARS MEETING: Our next STARS Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 4th at 9:30 a.m. We are always looking for fresh ideas and comments, please join us at a meeting, we don’t bite!!  That in mind, 3 of our Board members will be leaving and heading to Hilda Walker in the fall. We need parents to step up and help out. It is not a time consuming job, it is all to benefit the kids of this school!! PLEASE think about becoming a board member or event chairperson. If you would like, you and a fellow parent/friend can even “Co-Chair” together. It may make it easier and less overwhelming for everyone. Without the Parent/Teacher Board and Event Chairpersons, things such as Movie Night, Hot Lunch, Treat Day, Field Day, Book Fairs, Fundraisers, Spirit Wear, Author Assemblies, Popcorn Parties, 4th Grade Picnics and Market Days will be gone. If nobody wants to step up and do these things, then they will disappear. If you are interested in keeping these events from becoming extinct and would like to be a board member or chairperson, please contact a current board member, come to our meeting, or contact Mrs. Kohlbacher. We will be glad to talk to you and tell you what it’s all about. The kids and teachers really need your help!!

Again, our next meeting is Thursday, February 4th at 9:30 a.m., PLEASE join us!!!
